At Udaipur Marriott, the Romance is on the Table!

In Udaipur, fondly called the ‘Venice of the East’, it’s easy to get swept up by postcard-perfect palaces, mirror-still lakes, and jharokhas that seem to whisper old love stories. However, at the brand-new Udaipur Marriott Hotel, food takes center stage, and rightly so. Between live kitchens dishing out global flavors with a Rajasthani twist and cocktails as pretty as the sunsets, dining here feels as intrinsic to the city’s romance as its palaces.

Perched near the serene Fateh Sagar Lake with the Aravallis framing its skyline, the 227-room Udaipur Marriott Hotel hotel feels like a modern ode to Mewar in a seamless union of contemporary luxury and regal heritage. Think hand-painted Pichwai motifs on the walls, Mewar-style arches and jharokhas, and a chandelier-crowned staircase that deserves its own slow-motion walk. It’s heritage, but with the polish of contemporary luxury- the kind of place where your morning yoga session by the lake can segue seamlessly into artisanal coffee at Udaipur Baking Co.

It’s safe to say that at Udaipur Marriott, the heartbeat of the hotel is its kitchen, and nothing says it louder than the thalis. Curated by executive Chef Mohit Mishra and Sous Chef Ritesh Sharma, the indulgent Mewar Thali with lal maas, jangli murgh tucked in puff pastry, and chakki ki sabji; and the nostalgic Dal Baati Churma Thali, which riffs off the city’s local haunts, often catch you off guard. Think gatta curry with golden, crackly baatis and not one but three churmas- the classic, a wholesome bajra version, and a rose-scented beauty made with blooms plucked straight from the hotel’s garden. The only logical next step after this is a long, unapologetic nap.

But the kitchen doesn’t just rest on tradition. Thanks to Chef Ritesh, there’s whimsy everywhere; be it the dhokla arancini that marries Italian comfort with Gujarati snacking, or the tandoori kukkar sampler, served like a family feast with dal makhani, raita, chutneys, and sirka pyaaz on the side.

I set out with Paramjot Soni, Marketing & Communications Manager, for what felt like the most Udaipur thing to do-  a boat ride on the legendary Lake Pichola. The journey began at the iconic City Palace, its arches gleaming in the afternoon light, before our boat glided into calmer waters. Palaces, havelis, bustling ghats and chic lakefront restaurants fringed the shoreline, each view like a living postcard. On board with us was historian and raconteur Suresh Gothwal, who sprinkled the ride with tales of Udaipur’s past. Our destination was Jag Mandir, the jewel of the lake, rising out of the water like a mirage. “Built in the 1620s, this palace with its sprawling courtyards and manicured gardens has found new life as the backdrop for glittering weddings and private soirées”, says Gothwal while beautifully explaining the history of the city. A petite restaurant, framed by rose bushes and frangipani trees, tempts guests to linger a little longer.

But the stories make it even more magical. Gothwal revealed how a young Shah Jahan once took refuge here while rebelling against his father, and how Jag Mandir’s design later inspired the Taj Mahal itself. Floating there, with history, romance, and marble grandeur all around, it wasn’t hard to believe.

After wandering through history and stocking up on mawa mysore pak (trust me, it’s unmissable), I was welcomed to the Opal Longue at the hotel where Marriott’s cheeky ‘fusion Charlie’ high-tea experience makes its debut- a clever twist on the old English classic. Picture all this with dancers in vibrant ghagras spinning across the courtyard while a potter nudges you to try your hand at the wheel, sending you home with the clay piece you shaped yourself.

As Ranju Alex of Marriott International put it, “Udaipur is one of the most preferred destinations in Rajasthan and serves as a perfect backdrop to introduce our signature heartfelt service and quality standards.” After a stay here, I’d say it’s not just an introduction, it’s a love story in the making.
