Gaurav Gupta’s name has become synonymous with otherworldly fashion. This Indian couturier, a rising star in the global fashion scene, has carved a niche for himself with his dramatic and sculptural creations. Gupta’s designs are more than just clothing; they are works of art that blur the lines between surrealism, futurism, and a touch of maximalism. A favourite among celebrities, Gupta’s creations have graced the likes of international stars like Mindy Kaling, who wore a show-stopping gown to the 2024 Met Gala. His recent showcase at Paris Haute Couture Week, the Autumn Winter 2024 collection Jyotirgamaya, further solidified his reputation as a master of avant-garde couture. A celebration of feminity, sculptural sensualism and a maximalist flair, the collection stood true to the designer’s classic style.

Titled Jyotirgamaya, a Sanskrit term signifying the spiritual journey towards enlightenment, the collection encapsulates the essence. Gupta draws inspiration from both Vedic philosophy and Egyptian mysticism, resulting in a unique interplay of elements. The colour palette reflects this duality, transitioning from deep, almost abyssal blacks to ethereal Moonstone Ivory, symbolizing the path from darkness to light. It transitions from deep, abyssal blacks to the ethereal Moonstone Ivory, symbolizing a path from shadow to illumination. Moonstone Ivory captures the essence of celestial light, while sand tones evoke a sense of reflection. Bordeaux, a rich new addition, adds layers of depth and enlightenment. Black stands as the abyss from which light emerges, and metallic hues hint at transcendence into a radiant realm. Monochrome shades highlight the harmony found in contrasts, with each colour resonating with the transformative journey from darkness to inner light.

Gupta’s signature style lies in the seamless blend of tradition and innovation. Jyotirgamaya features corsetry techniques reimagined for a modern era, alongside innovative draping and sculpting methods. Flowing fabrics juxtapose with 3D elements, creating a dynamic interplay of textures. The silhouettes range from cropped metal breastplate jackets, a bold reinvention of traditional armour, to flowing saree gowns that celebrate Indian heritage. Gupta doesn’t shy away from experimentation, introducing new interpretations of classic garments like the Sharara and minidresses with exaggerated proportions. Jyotirgamaya encompasses Indian tradition and Western sensibilities.

The heart of Gupta’s work lies in the intricate embellishments that bring his creations to life. Jyotirgamaya features meticulous Aari embroidery, an ancient Indian technique, alongside opulent Zari Zardosi. Stooped in Gaurav Gupta’s philosophy, sculptural constructions find their way throughout the collection. The couturier’s signature sculpting art meanders throughout the collection.

This highlight of Jyotirgamaya is the dedication to craftsmanship which extends to the collection’s jewellery – a new venture for Gupta. Crafted in antique gold and silver, the statement ear cuffs and chokers borrow their names from Sanskrit and Hindi, further accentuating the collection’s cultural influences.
With Jyotirgamaya, Gaurav Gupta continues to push the envelope, blending cultural heritage with futuristic design. His work embodies a unique fusion of tradition and modernity, creating pieces that are timeless yet contemporary.
