Known for her eclectic prints and cutting edge silhouettes, Masaba Gupta made quite a splash recently with her much-loved show, Masaba Masaba, where the fashion designer plays herself in an otherwise fiction-oriented show. Following on the heels of her success, she recently launched her new cosmo-wellness brand LoveChild, with a range of lipsticks, nail paints, and face mists, all focused on clean beauty and wellness. The brand believes it is empathetic, vegan and cruelty-free, made for the modern man and woman who revels in honesty and self-expression. In a holistic approach, Gupta has launched a wellness blog as part of her brand LoveChild. LuxeBook caught up with Masaba for a chat with the woman of the moment, as she expressed her vision on launching beauty products that don’t just feel good, but are good for your skin!
Tell us how it feels to launch a brand after a decade.
I’m establishing a new brand after 12 years. I forgot what it takes to launch a new brand, and establish a category that I am fairly new to. We’ve had a sense of what it’s like, but yes, it’s a lot of work and challenging.
I’m grateful for the love the brand has been receiving and hope to cater the best to the audience in the months to come. The response has been so overwhelming and wonderful.
What is the aesthetic for the brand going to be going forward?
It will be a steady mix of beauty, wellness and problem-solving skincare products. It will slowly become more of a gender-neutral brand although a lot of the products even now are unisex.
Why did you choose to do a mix of cosmetics and wellness?
I wanted to build something that did not bind women with preconceived notions of beauty and skincare. Honesty, inclusivity, and efficacy have always been a top priority while creating LoveChild. My earlier collaboration with Nykaa gave me a great platform to take my first step and gave me an early insight into the consumer’s mind when it comes to the world of beauty, after which, I felt I was ready to deep dive further and venture on my own.
LoveChild is so much more than just makeup; it is love for your skin. It is a journey of nutrition, fitness, and wellness alongside beauty. With LoveChild, we have focused not only on color but also on a holistic cosmo-wellness range. The beauty space in India especially has so much to offer; there is something for everyone. My aim with LoveChild was to keep it simple and accessible to everyone.
What can one expect from LoveChild going forward?
We are launching very exciting products in the next month. We have the Kajal, Eyeliner, Lip Balm, Sheet mask and fragrances coming soon to you all! The packaging is vibrant and fun, enabling a unique expression of self-love.
Congratulations on your new show! Is acting something you will continue to pursue?
I will pursue acting if something exciting comes along. But it will always be my hobby. The brand comes first.
What would you say is the typical characteristic of the Masaba brand?
Being a woman of colour, coming from two different ethnicities, and dealing with acne and sensitive skin for over 15 years, I grew up loving all my mum’s makeup but disliking what it did to my skin! The #MasabaTribe women are trendy and experimental, but also perfectly happy to keep it low-key. She’s playful, she’s serious, she’s calm and collected, and a mood unto herself.
