The Met X Sprayground unveils a collection of bags inspired by history

The Met Museum has long been one of the most visited museums in the world and it continues to hone its title. especially holding one of fashion’s most coveted nights, The Met Gala the museum has seen visitors flocking to its door. But what makes The Met such a popular destination is that it houses more than 5,000 years of global art across 19 departments. Taking inspiration from its long history, travel fashion brand Sprayground has joined hands with the iconic New York museum to unveil a distinguished collection of 17 art-inspired bags. Each piece from The Met x Sprayground collection brings iconic artworks housed at the museum to life. Visitors and art lovers alike can now take home a piece of art with The Met’s new collaboration with accessories brand, Sprayground.

The Met x Sprayground’s collection is inspired by the inspired by the museum’s five millennia of art. As opposed to focusing on one section of the museum, the collection spans a rich history of 5,000 years around the globe within the halls of The Met. It includes the likes of Van Gogh’s Wheat Field With Cypresses, Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave, Antonio Canova’s Head of Medusa from Perseus With the Head of Medusa, late 17th-century Jingdezhen China’s Vase With Poems in a Panoramic Landscape and Ancient Egypt’s Hippopotamus, to name a few.
Highlights include the Chinese Landscape Backpack which borrows motifs from a late 17th-century Jingdezhen vase, the Kuba Kingdom Headdress Backpack based on a 19th-20th century beaded mpaan crafted in the Kuba Kingdom (present-day Democratic Republic of Congo), and the Greek Temple of Sardis Column Backpack which recalls a monumental foliate carved column ca. 300 BCE. Making it more descriptive and interactive, each bag includes a special tag, a hang tag, and a QR code. The QR code provides customers with detailed information about the bag and the original artwork that inspired the bag’s design.
From backpacks in vibrant hues mincing artistic canvas creations to cross-body bags in shades of blue, the collection proves that art can be experienced in more ways than one. And those who appreciate art need not only to hang it on the walls or place it at home, but they can also wear it. While the colour palette ranges from earthy tones to dark hues and vibrant pops of colour, the attention to detail across The Met x Sprayground collection is a visual treat.
The Met x Sprayground collection brings historic works of art outside the walls of the museum in a bold, contemporary way. The aim of the collaboration is to ensure these bags serve as a mode of self-expression for their wearers, signalling a love of art, culture and design.
Each bag being unisex in design, further showcases the androgynous nature of fashion accessories. The 17-piece capsule collection is exclusively available at The Met’s store and online at store.metmuseum.org. Each bag is a limited edition, ensuring that these unique creations will never be produced again.
