Jimmy Choo X Sailor Moon: A luxury anime collaboration
Jade Crasto
Jimmy Choo has released a Sailor Moon-inspired collection to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the iconic manga and anime series developed by Naoko Takeuchi. Sandra Choi, Jimmy Choo’s creative director, developed the collection in order to pay respect to Takeuchi’s vision and the effect that her work had on modern pop culture.
The collection’s standout pieces have to be the vibrant boots, platforms, and pumps inspired by the pastel hues of the Sailor Scouts. Nonetheless, the collaboration features some amazing bags as well as an album of Sailor Moon-inspired songs compiled by Honey Dijon. To commemorate the collection, artworks from Takeuchi’s Lovely Guardian Sailor Moon will be displayed on the walls of Jimmy Choo flagship stores throughout the world, replete with shimmering limited-edition packaging.
The current collection includes Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter boots, as well as Sailor Mars high heels and Sailor Venus pumps. The Sailor Moon boots have a knee-high stretch design and a brilliant pink lacquered kick-heel, while the green Sailor Jupiter lace-up leather combat boots include a rubber lug sole and block heel. The Sailor Mercury ankle boots in glossy patent leather round off the footwear lineup. Other items in the collection include red Sailor Mars high heels and orange satin Sailor Venus platform pumps.
But Jimmy Choo isn’t the first luxury brand to have collaborated with popular manga artists. Over the years brands have collaborated with animes like Naruto, Pokemon, and even Studio Ghibli. If you’re an otaku or a weeb or you just simply love fun fashion, here are some of the best anime fashion collaborations.
Loewe X Studio Ghbili
Loewe launched outstanding collections containing award-winning films such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001). This capsule collection includes distinctive bags, accessories, and ready-to-wear pieces with cute themes of well-known characters like the Soot Sprites and Totoro.
Coach X Naruto
In 2019, Michael B Jordan unveiled his first fashion collab with Coach and Naruto, his favorite Japanese anime. Naruto Uzumaki, a teenage ninja who longed to become the Hokage, the greatest ninja in his village, is the protagonist of the best-selling Japanese manga. Naruto fans will recognize elements from the anime such as the main characters Naruto, Sasuke, and Itachi, Sharingan and Sennin eye motifs, and so on. The capsule collection, imbued with utilitarianism, included unisex streetwear ready-to-wear – parkas, pullovers, shirts – accessories, footwear, and bags.
Gucci X Doraemon
Gucci unveiled a capsule collection featuring the popular robot cat Doraemon as part of their Chinese New Year campaign in 2021. The Japanese manga series and TV program were tremendously popular in the 1960s and early 2000s. To commemorate the milestone, the label featured Doraemon on a variety of ready-to-wear, footwear, and accessories.
Jujutsu Kaisen x Dolce & Gabbana
Jujutsu Kaisen has become extremely popular in anime and pop culture. In 2022, they made their first foray into the world of high-end streetwear and apparel. They did this by collaborating with the Italian-born premium fashion house Dolce & Gabbana. The JJK x Dolce & Gabbana Collection had eight streetwear outfits for 8 characters, including two with brand-new shoes accented with the characters’ names.
Two of the series’ main protagonists, Megumi Fushiguro and Togi Inumake, wear two distinct colors of the D&G Daymaster Sneakers. In addition to the vibrant, eye-catching colors, the most prominent element is the Jujutsu College School insignia, which is imprinted on the outer side of the upper and is a clear tribute to the institution that any fan would recognize.
