Outlandish Karl Lagerfeld tribute outfits at the Met Gala 2023

Fashion’s biggest (and grandest) night, the Met Gala 2023, took place on the first Sunday of May, May 1. The theme for the year was a homage to the iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld — “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
Celebrities stepped out to the red carpet in iterations of black and white which are key colours in Karl’s designs, pearl-embellished couture that is inspired by Chanel as well as Anne Hathway’s tweed gown by Versace. Among other attendees was Bollywood’s top actress Alia Bhatt, who made her Met Gala debut. She looked ethereal in a Prabal Gurung creation that was intricately embellished with pearls. It was an ivory silk tulle and satin face organza exaggerated basque waist ball gown embellished with hand-beaded pearls.
Black and white was the colour code for the evening at the Met Gala 2023 given Karl’s iconic creations at his eponymous label and during his stint at Chanel. The theme of the night was Karl Lagerfeld and while many attendees wore looks inspired by his designs, some had a more literal approach.
Several paid homage to the designer himself, who died in 2019. The train of Lily J Collin’s black tulle skirt had KARL spelt out in sequins and Jeremy Pope’s cape train had a Lagerfeld portrait on the back that practically took up the entire length of the Met stairs. But the key look was Jared Leto dressed as Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette. Others were more subtle. Olivier Rousteing of Balmain carried a quilted bag scrawled with the words Karl Who?, Jessica Hasting’s hair was Karl blonde, and Cara Delevinge’s white dress had the designer’s initials embroidered onto the front of the dress.
Others honoured Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette at the Met Gala 2023. Doja Cat and Jared Leto were both literally dressed as the cat, taking the theme to the next level. Doja’s custom Oscar de la Renta look was in honour of Karl Lagerfeld’s adored Birman cat. It was a silver full embellished fitted gown with a long feather train and a hood with cat ears. Jared Leto was dressed in a fully white cat costume looking almost straight out of Disney land. However, Chloe Fineman carried a pink cat-shaped bag.
