Interior design firm Beyond Designs makes it a point to stand out with their eclectic schemes, bringing a surprising mix of colours, patterns and décor. A spectacular example of their extraordinary technique is this beautiful two-storeyed home in Kolkata.
A contemporary home detailed with timeless classical features – this residence is an ode to the harmony of styles and genres in design. With a mix of Indian and European sensibilities, the home has been styled in the signature Beyond Designs fashion. A mix of patterns, textures and colours married together it comes together in a grand way.
A long corridor on the first floor leads to an L-shaped bar area, followed by the parent’s bedroom, the daughter’s room and her study room, all of which have been designed from scratch. The master bedroom on the second floor has also been redone.
The long corridor is decorated in two phases. Closer to the entrance, a signature console with upholstered vintage chairs on either side is kept. A photo gallery sandwiched by wall scones and an exquisitely faceted console with table lamps in brass, a large, heavy-framed mirror on the wall is placed towards the bar area.
In the bar area, a streamlined sofa is paired with another featuring grand contours. The sofa seat is upholstered in two different materials – plane velvet on the inside and a gorgeous printed fabric on the outside.
A modern art piece is coupled with folklore paintings embellished with elaborate frames and an art piece on canvas with a wooden frame in antique gold polish, distressed mirror and antique brass rivets. Neutral painted walls contrast with wood panelling on the other side. A black wall panelling surrounds the bar counter with an inlaid stone top, with golden accents for an added statement.
Every piece of furniture is treated as if it were a canvas or an artwork by embellishing it with details and accents. And everywhere we see a fusion of the contemporary and classic.
The wall in the adjoining bedroom features gorgeous leather panelling with a fabric clad wall on adjacent sides of the room. The bed is a classic double bed in grey tones with a curved velvet headboard fitted with rivets for a classic touch. The antique gold finish of the bedside scones, golden touches on the night tables, the round-top side table and floor lamp by the corner armchair add an opulent aesthetic.
The daughter’s room is done up in an elegant shade of blue with galleries of pretty framed photographs. A custom-created, mirror-clad, four-poster bed is finished with gold polish and a headboard in a shimmery white fabric. A carved wooden sofa upholstered in paisley fabric, night tables and a TV unit in white complete the rest of the furniture.
The daughter’s study room is a vibrant space with a wall unit in wood covered in bright printed fabric and antique brass rivets on the shutters.
The study table in wood with brass elements is finished in black matt PU (a two-component Polyurethane wood finish) and wooden chairs with wicker mesh upholstered with rust orange velvet fabric seats.
The master bedroom on the second floor has a regal air to it. A four-poster bed finished in antique gold lends sits in the middle of the room. The room has a neutral tone with wicker mesh panelling and matt PU finish in white. Red bedside tables offer a perfect contrast to the neutral tones in the room. Adding to the grandeur, chandeliers with black matt powder coating and crystal hangings on either side further accentuate the symmetry of the room.
An intricate, antique-inspired chandelier in a corner lights up a gorgeous powder room done up in red and natural stone. The powder room has heavy-framed mirrors covering the vanity. The wall opposite is decorated with vibrant traditional artworks with wooden frames and a distressed mirror.
